Where is WhatsApp blocked?

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app, allows users to make voice and video calls, but these features can WhatsApp's blocking situation is unusual. In most restricted countries, text messaging still works. It's the voice and video calling features that get targeted.

Countries that block WhatsApp calls (messaging may still work):

  • UAE — VoIP calls are blocked to protect local telecom revenue. Messaging works, but calls don't without a VPN.1
  • Saudi Arabia — similar VoIP restrictions, though enforcement has eased in recent years1
  • Qatar, Oman, Bahrain — varying levels of VoIP blocking across the Gulf states2
  • Egypt — WhatsApp calls are intermittently throttled or blocked2

Countries that block WhatsApp entirely:

  • China — blocked as part of the Great Firewall since 20173
  • Iran — blocked alongside most Western messaging platforms4
  • North Korea, Syria — no access to Western apps
  • Cuba — access is limited and unreliable2

Temporary blocks during unrest:

WhatsApp has been temporarily blocked during protests or political crises in countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia.5 These shutdowns often target all social media but hit WhatsApp especially hard because it's the primary communication tool for so many people.

Why WhatsApp blocking is different

Most countries that restrict WhatsApp don't block the whole app. They specifically target VoIP (voice over IP) traffic. ISPs use deep packet inspection to identify voice and video call data and throttle or drop it, while letting text messages through.1

This is a harder problem than unblocking a website. A simple VPN can route you around a domain block, but VoIP throttling requires your traffic to be indistinguishable from regular web traffic. If the ISP can tell you're making a call, it can still block it even through a basic VPN.

Lantern's protocols — including Shadowsocks, VLESS, and Hysteria 2 — are designed to make all traffic look the same. Your WhatsApp call looks like a normal HTTPS connection, so ISPs can't selectively block it.

Why Lantern works when other VPNs don't

Many VPNs can unblock WhatsApp messaging but still fail on calls. That's because standard VPN protocols like WireGuard and OpenVPN have recognizable traffic patterns that advanced ISP filters can detect and throttle.

Lantern automatically picks the protocol that works best on your current network. If one path is blocked, it tries another. This is especially important in the Gulf states, where telecom companies actively invest in VoIP detection because call blocking protects their revenue.1

Lantern is a nonprofit, built to keep people connected. During crises, it's a lifeline. During everyday use, it just makes sure your calls go through.

Get Lantern — it's free blocked in certain countries for various reasons. Some governments restrict access to WhatsApp calls to limit free communication, protect local telecom providers, or maintain control over information. In some cases, WhatsApp calls may be blocked during times of political unrest or to prevent the spread of misinformation.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) may also be required to block WhatsApp calls to comply with government regulations or to prioritize their own voice calling services. These restrictions can be frustrating for users who rely on WhatsApp to stay connected with friends, family, and colleagues across the globe.

Lantern offers a solution to these challenges by allowing you to bypass the restrictions and unblock WhatsApp calls. By connecting to a secure VPN server in a location where WhatsApp calls are not blocked, Lantern encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a different network. This process effectively masks your IP address and makes it appear as though you are accessing WhatsApp from a different country, enabling you to make voice and video calls freely.

With Lantern, you can enjoy unrestricted access to WhatsApp calls, ensuring that you can communicate with your contacts without interruption. Whether you're traveling abroad, living in a country with strict censorship, or facing temporary blocks, Lantern provides a reliable and user-friendly solution to keep you connected.
